Nestled on the shores of the Montreal River provides outdoor enthusiasts with endless opportunities to experience the great outdoors and wildlife. Located roughly 60 km west of Kirkland Lake and 100 km northwest of New Liskard, Matachewan offers endless ATV trail and is also famous for its Bear and Moose hunting. Fishing year round is a favourite sport with many unspoiled lakes and rivers only reachable by ATV.

Snowmobile trail Matachewan to Gowganda 1

Matachewan started out as a trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company. A large depot, stores and a church made up the town. The local First Nations traded their furs here and would camp along the Montreal River but not take up permanent residency. Growth of the town really began in the 1920s when gold, copper and molybdenite mineral deposits were discovered. From then on there were cycles of profit and lost common for most mining towns. Over time the economy shifted to forestry and tourism, attracting many visitors every year.
Matachewan is an ATV friendly town and ATVs are allowed on the municipal streets. However, there is a 20km/hr speed limit in place and is strictly enforced by the OPP. The adventure starts out on the trails offering a fantastic variety of terrains. From mud bogs to hilly ridges, stream crossing and rock climbing, you can take a leisurely jaunt or push yourself to the limit on a more challenging quest. Explore the wilderness on thousands of kilometres of old logging roads, bush trails and off trail adventures. Visit old abandon mines or by chance catch the perfect photo opportunity of a moose, bear, fox or lynx, which have frequently been sighted in the area. The scenery is fabulous as you meander through the Jack Pine and Spruce forests, so don't forget your camera!

Gassing up at camp 1

You can explore for days and not see it all, but one thing's for sure, you'll need a place to rejuvenate and park the quad when you just can't ride anymore. Golden Eagle Camp loves catering to ATVers. Just park your quad in front of your rustic log cabin or modern new cottage that are fully equipped with 3-4 piece bathrooms, hot and cold running water, woodstoves, BBQ's and all the modern kitchen necessities you will need. Even the bed lines are supplied; all you need to bring are you towels. There are ten housekeeping cottages to choose from at Golden Eagle Camp, four have satellite TV and Wi-Fi is available throughout the camp.
Take advantage of the many onsite conveniences, onsite fuel, sandy beach, and a waterslide and water trampoline including the general store featuring a large map showing where to ride. There is no organized trail system so no trail permits are required. When the mud cakes onto your bike there are several places to wash it off right. Large trailer? No problem, plenty of parking. In the evening join the other guest down at the beach fire pit and trade off the tales of the day, or plan an exciting adventure for the next day with a new group of riders.

Taking a break on an old logging road 1

Golden Eagle Camp is located about 7 hours from Toronto (2 1/2 hours from North Bay) on the shores of Sydney Creek, a tributary of the renowned Montreal River. Without a doubt, for excellent ATVing and a great place to stay Golden Eagle Camp is 'your place in the wilderness...outdoor splendor with indoor comfort'.
